Flat hair isn't a hair problem, it's a root problem. Everything you can see is being held down by the inch closest to your scalp — and no amount of product, backcombing or blow-drying upside down fixes it for longer than an hour.

A volumising iron works underneath. Its crimped ceramic plates press a fine zigzag into the hair at the roots, and that texture props the top layer up from below. The crimped sections stay hidden; all anyone sees is hair that suddenly has body. It's the trick stylists use before an updo, and it takes about five minutes to do yourself.

How to actually use it

This is the part most people get wrong, so it's worth being specific.

  1. Start with completely dry, clean hair. Damp hair and heat is how damage happens.
  2. Section off the top layer and clip it out of the way — that layer stays smooth and covers everything else.
  3. Underneath, take small sections and clamp the iron at the roots for a few seconds, an inch or so from the scalp. Work across the crown and the sides where you want lift.
  4. Drop the top layer back down. It falls over the crimped hair and hides it entirely.
  5. Style as normal. The volume holds for the day.

Used along the full length instead, the same plates give you a full crimped texture — the deliberate, slightly retro look that's very much back.

Why ceramic matters

Ceramic plates heat evenly and hold that temperature steadily across the whole surface. Cheaper metal plates develop hot spots, which means some sections get scorched while others barely take, and you end up going over the same hair repeatedly. Repeated passes are what actually damages hair, far more than a single correctly heated one.

Why it's worth buying

  • It solves something other tools can't. Straighteners smooth, curlers shape, dryers dry. None of them create lift at the root. This does one job properly.
  • The effect is invisible. Nobody can tell you've used it — they just notice your hair looks thicker.
  • It's quick. Five minutes on the under-layers, and it lasts until you wash it out.
  • It works on wigs too. Root lift at the crown is one of the simplest ways to stop a wig looking flat and cap-like.
  • It's compact. Small enough to live in a drawer or a weekend bag rather than take over a shelf.
  • Two colourways. Black or white, same tool.

Getting the best from it

Always use a heat protectant, even on the hidden sections — the roots are the newest, healthiest hair you have and worth looking after. Keep to the lowest temperature that gives you the result you want; fine hair needs far less heat than thick hair. Don't hold the plates in one place longer than a few seconds, and let it cool fully before it goes back in the drawer.

Fuller hair, from the only place volume can actually come from.
