Water wave is the texture that looks like hair that's been left to dry naturally after a swim — an irregular, flowing ripple rather than a uniform curl pattern. That irregularity is exactly why it reads as real. Uniform waves look set; water wave looks like it happened.

In chocolate brown at 26 inches, it's a soft, warm, expensive-looking length of hair that doesn't announce itself as a wig.

Water wave, and how it differs

Between the textures people usually choose from, water wave sits in its own place. Body wave is a gentle, open S — polished and predictable. Deep wave is tighter and more defined, closer to a curl. Water wave falls between them and, crucially, isn't consistent: the waves vary in size and direction down the length, the way naturally wavy hair does.

It's also the most forgiving to live with. Irregularity hides a slightly off parting, a day-three refresh, and a night spent sleeping on it. There's no set pattern for a crease to interrupt.

Chocolate brown

Warmer and softer than black, and considerably more flattering on most complexions. Black is stark against pale and mid skin tones and can drain colour from the face; a warm brown reflects light back and does the opposite. It also photographs far better, because it shows depth and shadow where solid black just goes flat.

It'll take colour going darker if you want espresso or near-black later. Going lighter would need bleaching, which isn't worth doing to a wig this colour.

4x4 closure, 150% density

The 4x4 is the simplest lace wig to install and the hardest to get wrong — four inches of lace gives a convincing parting without the ear-to-ear lace of a frontal, so there's far less to lay and far less that can go visibly wrong. With adjustable straps and combs in an average 21.5" to 22.5" cap, it can be worn without adhesive at all.

At 150% the density is natural rather than dramatic: light on the cap, comfortable all day, and genuinely difficult to spot. On a waved texture that's plenty — the waves create their own volume, so high density here would tip it into looking like a lot of hair rather than a lot of hair that happens to be yours.

Length

Twenty-six inches, stretched, which sits through the mid-back toward the waist. Water wave loses some visible length to the pattern — expect it to sit a few inches shorter than the stated measurement once it's dry and in its natural state.

Worth knowing: wigs arrive compressed from packaging and look thinner and shorter than expected out of the box. Shake it out and let it hang before judging it.

Why it's worth buying

• The texture does the work. Irregular waves look natural in a way styled curls never quite do, and they need no styling to look right.
• It's low maintenance. No daily heat, no defined pattern to maintain, and it recovers from being slept on.
• Brown is the flattering choice. Warmer against the skin than black, and much better in photographs.
• Easy to install. A 4x4 with straps and combs is about as forgiving as lace wigs get.
• Human hair. Straighten it for a completely different look, then wash it back to the wave.
• It protects your own hair. No heat, no colour, no daily manipulation underneath.

Care

Never brush it dry — detangle wet, with conditioner in, using fingers or a wide-tooth comb from the ends upward. Dry brushing pulls the wave out and it doesn't come back. Wash with a sulphate-free shampoo in sections, condition through the mid-lengths and ends rather than the roots, and air dry on a stand. Scrunch rather than rub. Between wears, refresh with a spray of water and a little conditioner instead of rewashing. At this length, braid it loosely or tie it back at night so the ends don't rub.
